Please consider donating to the Photography program through PPS School Pay under "Darkroom" - LINK: pps.schoolpay.com/
We need donations in order to keep the program going! Students can also purchase film under the "Film Donation" category. Thank you!! To My Students,
First, you may not need this letter. That’s okay. I felt I needed to write it, mostly so I could make sure you all know the following four things. You are loved. You are not alone. I am here to help. I am here to protect you. If I could say these things to you a million times, I would. Now, more than ever, it is important to show compassion and empathy. Marginalized groups and their allies around the country are feeling the sting of intolerance and hate, and it is the responsibility of every good person to fight for the opposite. Now, more than ever, we must try to, as Gandhi said, “be the change we wish to see in the world.” If you are upset or concerned about the future, do not fold into yourself, but rather turn your feelings out into the world: make art, be loud, stand up, and stand in the way; do not let negativity thrive. Be a force for empathy and you will inspire others to do the same. Spread knowledge around. Seek to understand; if you believe you know the truth, listen with kindness so that your audience might do the same for you. Now, more than ever, we must support one another. We must look for the things that connect us and hold them dear. We must look for the things that divide us and start building bridges from both sides. Fight hate with love, ignorance and fear with knowledge, intolerance with acceptance. Now, more than ever, it is important to tell your story. Don’t stop writing. Just as you learn from the experiences of the characters in the stories you read, others can learn from you. Show them your world so they can’t ignore it. You are important and your voice will impact the future. Please don’t forget that you are loved. You are not alone. I am here to help. I am here to protect you. These facts won’t change. When things feel dark, be a light for others and let others be a light for you. As the recently deceased Leonard Cohen wrote, “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.” Courage doesn’t mean lack of fear, it means forging ahead even when you’re afraid. Meal Train: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/89rqv2 The email that went out to families yesterday:
Hello Language Arts and Photography families, First, thank you all so much for being who you are, and for being a part of my extended da Vinci family. The outpouring of kind words and support has been overwhelming, and I'm thankful every moment to be part of such an incredible community. As many of you undoubtedly now know, my situation changed on Friday when I was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. After a litany of tests these past few days, we have determined an aggressive course of action to fight back. In this effort, I will have to take a medical leave and will not be able to return to teaching this school year. As you can imagine, the diagnosis, coupled with having to relinquish my classroom for the foreseeable future, has been quite a difficult shock. Next Monday, I will begin a four month round of chemotherapy. Assuming this goes according to plan, I will likely need a complete mastectomy of my left breast after completion of the chemo. For my age group and diagnosis, there is a 99.1% survival rate, so while this is going to be an exceedingly difficult time, we know this is just a bump in the road. In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of teaching is modeling the traits we think well rounded adults should exhibit, and I believe wholeheartedly in openness and mutual respect. We foster community by supporting others when they need it and by admitting when we need it ourselves. Within this difficult work, teachers grow and our students grow, and I believe mutual respect demands it. In that spirit, I spoke to the students today about the situation and we had a very open and honest conversation. I am so proud of their strength and support, and I know we will help each other to get through these tough times. Thank you all again! I can't believe I get to be a part of this community, and I don't think I can properly express my gratitude for the incredible kindness and love I've received from everyone. So many people have already asked how they can help, and I promise we will let you all know when we have a system in place - my parents and partner are helping to set up an online site that will organize all that stuff for us. In the meantime, I hope to see you all soon, and I welcome your help in kicking cancer's ass! Jasmine Spiegel On a much more uplifting note, our photography program is proud to boast about our performance in the Oregon Scholastic Art Awards. I couldn't be more impressed with this group and I have been bragging to anyone who will listen! This post will celebrate both of our GOLD KEY winners, all 5 of our silver key winners, and all 9 (!!!) of our honorable mentions. I want you to see all this awesome, award-winning work, so here it is! Hello Photographers and their Families!
WE NEED YOUR HELP! As students know, we are getting ready to submit artwork to the Scholastic Art Awards. This year, we are asking that eighth graders submit 3 pieces and seventh graders submit 1. Students are expected to fill out, sign, and have their parents sign TWO forms for each piece of artwork. One form goes to da Vinci and the other goes to Scholastic. These forms are coming home with students TODAY! Each art piece requires a $5 fee. Please include either the 5 or 15 dollars with the signed forms when you send them back to school with your student. If you are interested in helping out a student in need, please feel free to add 5 or 10 dollars to your contribution to help cover the cost of another student. In addition to the 2 forms per artwork, I will be sending home a "Waiver" form for students who need help covering the cost of their submissions. I understand that 5 or 15 dollars is not always an easy amount to contribute, and we will make sure all students' costs are covered. Please fill out the Waiver form if you cannot pay the fee. Please return the forms by this FRIDAY, 12/11. The art team needs to collect all the money and submit everything by next Wednesday, so we need your help! If a student loses their forms, they can be reprinted from www.artandwriting.org. Students just need to log in and go to their submissions, and there will be an option to print the forms. Please make sure each piece has TWO forms - this means eighth graders will need to sign 6 forms. I will be emailing parents again later in the week to confirm that everything is on track. This is a great opportunity for students to have their work recognized, and we appreciate your willingness to help! Please email with any questions. I look forward to seeing signed forms from all students by Friday. Thank you, Jasmine Spiegel Hello Photographers and their Families
Let me first start by saying how grateful I am for our beautiful community, and how lucky I feel to have you all in my life. After what happened in Paris this weekend, it is especially important that we band together in solidarity and take a few extra moments to appreciate our loved ones and our privilege. We are all French this weekend, and we all mourn as any human with love in their heart must. Stay strong and don't let fear triumph in your world. It has been such an honor to see all our young photographers growing and learning - the photographs students are making are phenomenal, and getting better all the time. This week, we started HOME and Depth of Field (DOF), both of which can be found at the bottom of the Links & Documents page. Students who complete the HOME assignment on time will have a chance to show their work in the gallery and sell their pieces as part of our fundraiser. This is a great opportunity for budding young artists. Capstone students will have a chance to start their research work for the Pecha Kucha in earnest this week, and they will be expected to choose their photographer if they haven't already. All seventh grade students should be starting to figure out their one image for the Scholastic Art Awards, and eighth graders should be choosing three. We have a lot of ongoing projects, and I am so proud of the work I am seeing. It is my hope that we will continue to grow and learn how to take ourselves seriously as photographers and artists. There are several field trips and guest speakers in the works to help make this possible. Thank you all for your continued work and contribution to our great learning community. Have a nice Sunday :) Ms. Spiegel Hello Photographers and their Families!
Thank you for your hard work finishing up the Motion assignment. We will start two new assignments next week, so please complete that work ASAP if you haven't. On Monday, we will begin exploring Depth of Field, which requires the use of various aperture sizes. As the motion assignment taught us to use our shutter speeds in different ways, the aperture work will help us learn how to use shallow or broad focus. Students will see how the different aperture sizes impact the images they make of their subjects. Subject matter will be entirely up to the students for this assignment. Additionally, students will produce between 2 and 5 prints during the month of November around the theme of "Home," some of which will be shown in the gallery during the "Home" exhibition. Capstone students will start working on their Pecha Kuchas, and we will explore research methods, etc. for this. They will also create their own student websites to upload images of their work throughout the year. Each student will have to decide which prints they want to send to the Scholastic Art Awards. 8th graders will be expected to submit 3 pieces and 7th graders will submit 1. Expect a letter home about these expectations very soon. Thank you for your continued efforts :) Please review the Expectations for Classroom, Darkroom, and "Out Shooting" as we dive into our second quarter work. Enjoy your weekend! Ms. Spiegel |
