Hello Spiegel Core families!
So sorry if it seems I've put this off until the very end of the weekend - it's been a busy one!
Last week, we started vocabulary list 8 and finished WWW list 1. Now that eighth graders and some seventh are focused on WWW, the rest of the class will do more intensive work with their vocab lists each week in order to really get to know the words. This will also provide a little bit more class time for supported WWW work.
We only just started talking about our Watsons Go to Birmingham unit this week and discussed some of our "preconceived ideas" of human rights and relationships in preparation for reading. We will begin reading the book as a class in the next few days.
For the last two days of the week, we spent a good chunk of time reading about, discussing, and creating scrolls to represent the early days of Judaism. Them, we did an interesting simulation in class that showed students a smaller scale version of the Jewish diaspora. As we finish up our discussions about Judaism, I will be displaying some artifacts from my own Jewish upbringing for students to explore. Though I wouldn't consider myself religious, I am a bit of an expert on Judaism! We will segue into studying ancient India this week.
Stay tuned, as we will also begin a fun project called the "Annotated Discography." This project will mix college style Annotated Bibliography formatting with personal narrative, literary analysis, and more. The class will work together to create an online Google doc that we can all access and that can serve as an awesome reference for our favorite songs and, eventually, our favorite books.
That's it for now! Ongoing projects to be thinking about: Current Events and Independent Book Projects.
Also, the final scores aren't in yet, but I'm relatively positive we blew away the competition for the coin drive! I don't want to count our chickens before they hatch, so I'll just say I'm very proud of our awesome class! At my last count, we had almost 200 on our own without Mary's extreme kindness in doubling our amount! I'll let you know as soon as the numbers are in.
Thanks everyone. Hope the weekend was great! Don't forget our Egyptian feast tomorrow!!
