Thanks for a great first two days!
These students have been insanely patient and impressively understanding of all the frenzied schedule changing and last minute adjustments. It has been hard getting started with things shifting so much.
Yesterday, we wrote and talked about why and what we want to photograph. Today, we talked about some basic expectations (see Google doc under the Links & Documents Tab - scroll to the bottom) and looked at photographs. I have filled this blog with great photographs all summer long, and students got to explore them and pick some favorites.
Due Monday 8/31 - Students are to write a paragraph with sentences of varying length about a photograph of their choice from the blog. This is opened ended - I want to see your natural response to art: what you connect with and why. Can't wait to read them!
IMPORTANT - starting Monday, students should have cameras with them at school. You must have your own 35mm camera. Your camera should have manual settings. We are going to spend some real time discussing how to use these settings and why they are important, so manual cameras are a must.
If you cannot acquire a camera due to financial or other reasons, please talk to me! We'll figure something out for sure.
Here in Portland, you can find cameras at Blue Moon Camera and Machine (8417 N Lombard St,); Pro Photo Supply (1112 NW 19th Ave); Citizens Photo (706 SE 6th Ave); and Hollywood Camera Store (4039 NE Sandy Blvd). You can also check thrift shops, Craigslist, eBay, etc. Online, I recommend B&H Photo/Video http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ and Freestyle Photo Supply http://www.freestylephoto.biz/
You will all receive a full syllabus on Monday, and we will get started doing some cool stuff next week. I am so excited to work with all you young, inspiring artists!
Have a great weekend :)
