Dear Families,
I hope this post finds you well. As some of you may know, I have had some recent health concerns. Unfortunately, the doctors tell me I have an injured (though very likely not cancerous) tumor in my left breast. Due to its size (larger than a golf ball!), it needs to be removed as soon as possible. My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, February 2nd, and will require me to miss at least the rest of that week of school. This scheduling happened very suddenly, so I apologize for the lack of advance notice. We will have two substitutes that the students already know, so I expect the week to go pretty smoothly. Students will be working on specialized projects during this time and will be expected to put in their strongest efforts in my absence.
For those of you who have emailed me recently but haven’t received a response, I offer sincere apologies. Responses are forthcoming. For those of you who are waiting for Catholic school recommendations, I appreciate your patience! Those recommendations will be completed before my surgery, likely over this weekend. If you have any questions, concerns, thoughts, suggestions, jokes, or any other type of communication need, please feel free to contact me. After the surgery, I will be available by phone and email, though significantly less available than usual. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need to, though!
This whole process has made me feel incredibly lucky to have my da Vinci colleagues and community around me. Other teachers have kindly offered lesson plans, hugs, food, compassion, and humor. Students have expressed the sweetest worries and most thoughtful responses. Even though this is a hard time in my life, I see it as an opportunity to appreciate and value the good in my world, and our da Vinci kids are a huge part of that good.
Thank you all so much for your understanding and support during this time.
Jasmine Spiegel
