Hello Photographers and their families!
We had a great first full week of school, and I had a lot of fun helping students get to know their cameras and how they work. Students have now had a chance to label a diagram with the different parts of the camera, and they will be expected to show that they've learned this basic information on Tuesday with a Camera Parts Quiz in class. Students will be expected to not only successfully label each part, but to tell me what it does. Example: "This is the aperture ring - it controls how much light comes into the camera."
We had an awesome guest speaker on Wednesday who did a presentation about Jazz music and how it relates to art. All visual art students at da Vinci will be working on Jazz Album cover projects, to be completed before the gallery show opens at the beginning of October.
Because many of our budding photographers have not learned enough yet to complete this project in the darkroom, you will see that this assignment is much more of an open "art" assignment and less of a specific photography assignment. Check out the information under the Links & Documents tab. Scroll down to the bottom for Photography information.
I am currently in the process of purchasing film in bulk so that I may supply it to students at a reduced cost. I will be selling rolls of film for $5, starting before the end of September, in order to make it easier for students to get the supplies they need.
I will also be sending an email out to all B&W photography families asking for a $10 requested donation for lab fees for the class. Because I am not asking students to purchase their own paper, and I will be supplying the chemicals, etc. (everything needed except a camera and film, which will cost extra), I am hoping families will be able to contribute $10 to keep the budget alive. I do not want this to be a burden for any families, so please do not give your hard earned money to the photography budget unless it is a financially viable option for you!
Next week, we will learn how to load film in the camera and how to roll it onto reels once we've finished taking pictures. It is my goal that by the end of the week, students will know how to use their camera and how to process film when they finish a roll. A few experienced students will be trained in the darkroom next week, as well, so that they can help support their peers who are newer to the world of photography.
Expect an email from me soon with details about purchasing supplies and the $10 lab fee for the class.
Thank you for being awesome, and have a great weekend!
Ms. Spiegel
