I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and your extra hour today! It looks like a beautiful first day of November after a crazy rainy Halloween. Hope you all stayed dry.
My apologies for the late post. It's been a busy weekend! Look for Movie Trailer grades later today, as well as updated grades for new things received. Thank you for your patience.
Tomorrow is the first day of second quarter, and we will be starting with an expository writing assessment. Students will read two articles about sugar and write a short expository essay in response. This short essay will be completed in class over the span of several days, and will serve as a benchmark for writing growth over the school year.
We will complete those essays and then dive into our Banned & Challenged book unit. After learning about why books are challenged or banned, students will check out their own novels from a long list of choices. Each student will read a different text, but they will be looking for the same types of content. Students will scour their books for not only objectionable, but also high-quality content that makes the book worth reading.
This unit will culminate with an argumentative essay and a short speech. Both will follow a more formal structure in order to help prepare students for the work they will do in high school. A more detailed letter will be emailed and sent home with students soon.
I really enjoyed our first quarter together, and I am looking forward to the work we will do in second quarter.
Have a great Sunday! :)
Ms. Spiegel
