Please forgive the delay in updating the blog! It has been a hectic first couple of weeks getting everything organized and ready to go.
Is everyone ready for Back to School Night tonight?!
Last week, we read "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," by Ursula K. Le Guin and discussed unreliable narrators, "breaking the fourth wall," and a variety of other concepts explored in both this text and "Harrison Bergeron" from week one.
This week, we are starting our DIG (Design In Groups) Culture Unit! Each core class will create their own civilization. We are in the process of designing ours based on the seven cultural universals that apply to all civilizations. Students are coming up with tons of creative, funny, and complex ideas!
We are also finishing our Neighborhood Map project, which will culminate with a personal narrative about something we experienced in our neighborhoods growing up.
Attached to this post and added to the archive, you will find "Omelas" and the supplemental materials we used to study it, the Neighborhood Map Assignment, the 8 questions students are using to guide their crafting of a civilization, and a digital version of the Powerpoint Presentation I will be doing for parents tonight at Back to School Night. If you can't make it, please check out the presentation and contact me with any questions!
I look forward to seeing you all tonight! :)
